A BRIEF HISTORY OF
ACT 4 – OCALA CIVIC THEATRE, INC.
ACT 4, which began its 30th Season on July 1, 2017, has a long history of supporting Ocala Civic Theatre.
The first organizational meeting of ACT 4 was held on November 30, 1988, at the Ocala Public Library with sixteen people in attendance. These people became the steering committee for the organization. The group began to meet at the Theatre in February 1989 and planned a membership drive for April. By-Laws were formally adopted and Articles of Incorporation were filed on May 5, 1989. The first fund-raising party, Best Foot Forward, was held at the Appleton Museum of Art in June of that same year.
Since that time, there have been many events, including Broadway revues, art fairs, dinner parties, flea markets, garage sales, quilt shows, bake sales, card parties, fashion shows, dinner theatres and casino cruises, as well as Gift Box sales and Gift Basket giveaways.
During this 29th Season, ACT 4 contributed more than $15,000.00 to the Theatre, including the purchase of capital improvements ($6,921.00), scholarships for youth after-school theatre classes ($5,000.00) and college scholarships ($3,000.00).
At the end of Fiscal Year 2016-2017 (ending June 2017), ACT 4 will have raised and contributed more than $160,000.00 to Ocala Civic Theatre.
Items which ACT 4 has purchased for the Theatre over the years include the ladies room for the Theatre expansion, hearing enhancers, wireless microphones, wireless telephone headsets; box office ticket scanner; spotlights; costume shop refrigerator, washing machine and dryer; concession stand refrigerator; shop hand and power tools; copy machines; file cabinets; box office stools; orchestra music stand lights; lobby brochure rack; and a variety of other items requested by the Theatre. Each season, ACT 4 pays the royalties for final dress rehearsals which are open to Marion County school students, a Golf Tournament hole sponsorship; a program ad; and cast and crew “strike parties”; as well as providing scholarships for the Theatre’s after-school and summer youth programs. Additionally, Fran Clemons ACT 4 Scholarships (named for the organization’s founder) are awarded each year to talented college students who major in the arts.
ACT 4 members have also contributed thousands of hours volunteering in such areas as box office, set building, mailings, concessions and ushering. ACT 4 has made a difference at Ocala Civic Theatre and will continue into the future.
